For the second consecutive year, the Sheila B. Jones Environmental Education Scholarship has honored a student committed to a future in environmental education. Paige Meadows, a junior at North Carolina State University from Henderson, is this year’s recipient. She is pursuing a major in Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology with a minor in Environmental Education and will receive a $1,000 scholarship to aid her academic pursuits.
“We were looking for a student who is highly motivated, hard-working, curious and passionate about teaching others about environmental stewardship,” said Wake County Commissioner Tara Waters. “Paige has proven herself to be deeply committed to wildlife and education. She has maintained exceptionally high grades while actively engaging in both volunteer and paid opportunities related to wildlife, agriculture, conservation and education.”
Meadows has volunteered with the Piedmont Wildlife Center and Raleigh Parks and Recreation. She is also active in several NC State clubs focused on wildlife and environmentalism. Her career goals include becoming a wildlife caretaker and educator, with an interest in serving as a ranger with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
“With this scholarship, I hope to cover a large portion of my senior year tuition, which would not be possible otherwise,” said Meadows. “I also plan to pay for my environmental education certification, which will allow me to make a difference in the future of the environment.”
The scholarship was launched by Friends of the Wake Soil and Water Conservation District to support high school seniors in Wake County who have been accepted into college or current college students residing there. Annually, one outstanding student receives $1,000 to further their career in environmental education.
The next application cycle begins in January 2026.
