The Wake County Animal Center is nearing a critical capacity, with only a few kennels available. Currently, the facility is housing 236 dogs, two puppies, 59 cats, 197 kittens, two rabbits, and two rats. The center is quickly running out of space.
“We are doing everything we can to avoid having to make heartbreaking choices,” said Wake County Commissioner Shinica Thomas. “The community has always stepped up when we’ve needed them most, and now is one of those times.”
To address overcrowding, the center is waiving adoption fees for all dogs and cats that have been on the adoption floor for 15 days or more. This special offer runs from Thursday, May 29, through Sunday, June 8.
The public can assist in several ways:
Those ready to adopt can visit the adoption gallery or see the animals in person. The shelter operates daily from noon to 6 p.m., seven days a week. It is located at 820 Beacon Lake Drive near the intersection of I-440 and New Bern Avenue in Raleigh.
