The 18U Junior Hurricanes Black and USPHL Elite Jr. Hurricanes both won their respective national championships this weekend, the organization announced on March 30. The victories took place in West Chester, Pennsylvania, marking a significant achievement for youth hockey in Raleigh.
These wins highlight the strength of the local hockey community and reflect positively on youth sports development in the region. The success of these teams may also inspire younger athletes to pursue similar goals.
The 18U Junior Hurricanes Black team completed an undefeated run at the Tier II 1A Chipotle-USA Hockey National Championship by defeating Greenville Rage from South Carolina with a score of 4-2. Forward Oliver Cowan recorded four goals and nine assists during the tournament, contributing to nearly half of his team’s total points. Cooper MacDonell scored multiple points in every game, finishing with twelve overall. Goaltender Gavin Lowry was victorious in all four starts, including a shutout against Tulsa Jr. Oilers that helped secure their spot in the championship match.
Coach Derek Mazepa said, “This win is massive. We have five guys who have been to the nationals three times. It feels good to bring one home for them and the team.” He added, “We have 12 kids that aren’t coming back and may never play again, to send them off like this, there’s honestly no better way.”
The USPHL Elite Jr. Hurricanes also claimed victory after overcoming early setbacks during pod play and went on to defeat Fort Wayne Spacemen in Wayne, New Jersey for their third league title in four years. Liam Geyer contributed one goal and two assists while Lucas Connery scored twice; Brayden Piscitelli had three assists during the final game.
Several other Raleigh-area teams competed at nationals over recent days as well: Girls Tier I 14U Junior Canes, Girls Tier I 16U Junior Canes, Girls Tier I 19U Junior Canes, Youth Tier II 14U NC Golden Bears, and Youth Tier II 16U Raleigh Raptors participated but did not capture titles.
