Governor Josh Stein appeared on national television with Stephen Colbert to discuss the Trump Administration’s handling of Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina and the One, Big, Beautiful Bill (OBBB). The appearance has drawn criticism from political opponents.
According to a statement, President Trump’s administration prioritized reforming FEMA after what was described as a “disastrous response” to the hurricane. The statement claims that private organizations like Samaritan’s Purse were relied upon more heavily than government agencies during relief efforts.
The discussion also touched on health insurance concerns. Contrary to claims that hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians would lose coverage, it was stated there are no Medicaid cuts in the OBBB. Instead, the bill aims to restore Medicaid’s mission, restrict taxpayer funds for transgender surgeries, and introduce work requirements for able-bodied individuals.
NCGOP Communications Director Matt Mercer criticized Governor Stein’s choice to appear on Colbert’s show. “Gov. Stein should spend more time in North Carolina making state government work better and less time on junkets to hobnob with liberal so-called comedians in New York City,” he said.
A FEMA review panel is currently evaluating how disaster relief efforts can be improved following past challenges.
