Wake County has given the green light to enhancement plans for EMS Station 2 on Noble Road in Raleigh, originally built in 1978 to serve the Five Points area. A new structure will incorporate an additional ambulance bay, expanded staff living areas, and eco-friendly features.

Wake County Commissioner Shinica Thomas remarked, "As we plan for the future of Wake County, we’re always making sure to account for sustainability and staff wellness. Upgrading Station 2 better positions our EMS system to keep up with the demands of population growth, and it also ensures that the staff we rely on when lives are on the line have the best possible environment, not just to serve others, but to care for themselves."

Currently, the station spans 1,759 square feet, with almost two-thirds allocated for vehicle bays. The new design will add 2,624 square feet. The enhancements include an additional vehicle bay and expanded staff living areas to handle increased call volumes efficiently.

The plans consist of greater dining and living spaces, a supervisor's office, extra storage, and a wellness room for staff. The wellness room offers a private space for reflection or meditation and can serve as a lactation space.

Sustainability is a key focus in the new station's design. It will feature a solar photovoltaic system, low-flow plumbing fixtures, high-efficiency heat pumps, polished concrete flooring, low-carbon concrete, and drought-tolerant plants.

Following schematic approval, Wake County will proceed with permitting and public bids. Construction is slated to begin this fall and finish by late 2026. EMS units are expected to start utilizing the station by early 2027.
