The Carolina Hurricanes faced a setback on Saturday, losing 3-1 to the Edmonton Oilers. The game took place in Raleigh, North Carolina, and marked the start of a back-to-back set for the Hurricanes.
In the early stages of the game, Carolina had three power-play opportunities within the first 14 minutes but failed to capitalize. They managed only two shots on goal and conceded a shorthanded goal during this period.
The Hurricanes were unable to replicate their strong start from Thursday's game, missing an opportunity to take an early lead. The match remained closely contested until late in the second period when Edmonton extended their lead.
Carolina managed to score in the final period through a power-play goal by Sebastian Aho, assisted by Mikko Rantanen. This marked consecutive games with power-play goals for the team for the first time since December.
Despite efforts by Rod Brind'Amour's squad to rally late in the game, Oilers' goaltender Calvin Pickard prevented further scoring. Edmonton secured their victory with an empty net goal in the closing seconds.
Hurricanes' goaltender Frederik Andersen experienced a rare loss against Edmonton, bringing his career record against them to 18-3-2 after allowing two goals on 30 shots.
Edmonton's shorthanded goal was only the third allowed by Carolina this season. Shayne Gostisbehere reached a milestone with his 400th NHL assist during Aho's power-play goal.
This loss was unusual for Carolina at home as they entered Saturday with an Eastern Conference-leading 22 home wins. It was just their second regulation loss at Lenovo Center since January 4.
Following the game, Coach Rod Brind'Amour commented on his team's slow start: "We always seem to (start slow and come alive late). The start wasn't good, obviously." Team captain Jordan Staal echoed these sentiments: "A lot of our games lately have been slow starts."
Sebastian Aho reflected on missed opportunities: "I thought the first period was the worst period for us... Three power plays and if you're not scoring... giving up one too, that hurts."
The Hurricanes will face off against Calgary Flames at Lenovo Center as they complete their Alberta-focused weekend series on Sunday night.
