Attorney General Jeff Jackson has informed North Carolinians that the state's price gouging law is now in effect following a state of emergency declaration by Governor Josh Stein ahead of an upcoming winter storm. This law prohibits businesses from charging excessively high prices during emergencies. Residents are encouraged to report instances of price gouging to the Department of Justice at 1-877-5-NO-SCAM or via their website.
"I want people to get through the winter storm safely without having to worry about scammers," stated Attorney General Jeff Jackson. "If you're concerned that a business is charging too much for a good or service, please file a complaint with my office. We'll take a close look, and we'll take action if price gougers are hurting North Carolinians."
Businesses may need to raise prices due to increased costs or critical incidents affecting their industry. However, they must not do so unreasonably for profit and should inform customers about any necessary increases before purchase.
The price gouging law becomes active when the governor declares a state of emergency. It is currently in force under both the winter weather and Hurricane Helene states of emergency. The Department of Justice has received nearly 500 complaints related to hurricane recovery efforts. Last December, they filed a lawsuit against a tree removal company accused of overcharging $25,500 from a couple in Hendersonville.
