Today, Governor Roy Cooper honored former University of North Carolina basketball coach Roy Williams with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. This recognition is North Carolina's highest honorary award and was given for Williams' significant contributions to the state during his tenure as head coach at UNC Chapel Hill.

"Coach Williams exemplifies what it means to be a Tar Heel and a North Carolinian," stated Governor Cooper. "From his time on the court to his philanthropic endeavors, Coach Williams' work and legacy continues to impact our state. I am excited to recognize his contributions and welcome him to the Order of the Long Leaf Pine."

In his speech, Coach Roy Williams reflected on his years leading UNC’s basketball team and expressed gratitude towards his wife for her support. Despite traveling extensively across the country, Coach Williams and Wanda Williams have always considered North Carolina their home.

Williams led UNC’s Men’s Basketball Team for 18 seasons, achieving three NCAA National Championships, five Final Four appearances, nine ACC regular-season championships, and three ACC tournament championships. Before joining UNC, he coached at the University of Kansas for 15 seasons.

Beyond coaching, both Coach Williams and Wanda have contributed to educational initiatives like the Carolina Covenant Scholarship and Chancellor’s Science Scholars Program.
