Governor Roy Cooper announced that Cherokee Tobacco Company plans to create 39 new jobs and invest over $14 million in a new manufacturing and distribution facility in Caswell County. "Agriculture roots run deep in North Carolina as it remains our greatest economic driver," said Governor Cooper, emphasizing the state's skilled workforce and favorable business climate.
Cherokee Tobacco Company, a family-owned business with over two decades of experience in manufacturing cigarettes, cigars, and pipe products, will consolidate its operations with JEB International into a 65,000-square-foot facility in Pelham. Jay Barker, CEO of both companies, expressed excitement about the move: "We believe this new facility will improve efficiency for both groups and create the optimal environment to carry our companies and our brands into the future."
N.C. Commerce Secretary Machelle Baker Sanders highlighted North Carolina's leadership in tobacco production: "Our manufacturing and agribusiness industries continue to evolve and attract innovative companies." N.C. Representative Renée A. Price welcomed the development: "We appreciate the people and partnerships that helped recruit yet another successful family-owned agribusiness to Caswell County."
The average annual wage for these positions is expected to be $65,154, surpassing the county average of $43,046. The new jobs could generate an annual payroll impact exceeding $2.5 million for the region.
Cherokee Tobacco Company received a performance-based grant of $125,000 from the One North Carolina Fund to support their relocation efforts. This fund aids local governments in attracting economic investments without upfront payments; companies must meet job creation and investment targets before receiving funds.
Key partners involved in this project include various state departments and local entities such as Piedmont Community College and Caswell County Economic Development.
