Attorney General Josh Stein has issued warnings to several phone companies accused of allowing robocalls to reach North Carolinians. Stein stated, "These phone companies let robocallers on our networks and they plague North Carolinians with illegal scam calls. These companies need to act now to stop these robocalls from inundating people’s phones."
The task force, which includes 51 bipartisan attorneys general, has informed the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) about its findings and is considering further actions. The targeted companies include KWK Communications, Inbound Communications (formerly Inbound Inc.), AKA Management, and CallVox LLC.
KWK Communications allegedly routed over 20,000 calls with spoofed numbers and more than 8.7 million calls using invalid Caller ID numbers in one month in 2022. Inbound Communications reportedly routed over 28.4 million DirecTV and cable discount scam calls in a single month that same year.
AKA Management allegedly handled around 12.1 million Amazon and Apple imposter robocalls in a single month in 2022. CallVox LLC received notices for facilitating unlawful or suspicious robocalls through the U.S., including thousands of calls to those on the Do Not Call list.
The task force warns that continued transmission of such calls could lead to legal action against these providers.
