Western North Carolina leaders and educators are urging state legislators to focus on storm recovery efforts rather than allocating substantial taxpayer funds to private school vouchers. Governor Roy Cooper emphasized the need for support in the region, stating, "The people of Western North Carolina need our support right now to continue recovery and rebuilding their communities."

Hurricane Helene, described as the most devastating storm in North Carolina's history, caused $53 billion in damages. Despite this, Republican legislators plan to allocate $463 million towards private school vouchers. Educators from the region have voiced their concerns, advocating for investment in public schools and community rebuilding.

Wendi Craven of Burke County School Board highlighted the importance of funding public schools over expanding private school vouchers. She stated that "early intervention is critical" for addressing learning loss and mental health issues resulting from the hurricane.

Josh Lynch, Superintendent of Macon County Schools, urged legislators to prioritize recovery measures. He noted that utilizing taxpayer dollars for rebuilding would support long-term recovery efforts in western counties.

Chad Calhoun from Mitchell County Schools expressed gratitude for current funding but stressed the ongoing financial challenges due to increased operational costs. He called for additional legislative support to cover these expenses.

Dr. Maggie Fehrman of Asheville City Schools underscored the essential role public schools played during the crisis and warned against diverting funds away from them through voucher programs like House Bill 10.

Melissa Godfrey from Clay County Schools emphasized the resilience of local communities while urging legislators to prioritize public education needs over voucher expansion initiatives.

The Office of State Budget and Management has projected a budget shortfall due to tax cuts for wealthy individuals passed by Republican leadership. This fiscal challenge could complicate future funding for storm recovery efforts.

Governor Cooper proposed a $3.9 billion budget package aimed at rebuilding infrastructure damaged by Hurricane Helene. However, this proposal was not passed by the legislature.
