Last week, Governor Roy Cooper issued an Executive Order to direct the donation of state surplus goods to Western North Carolina. This measure aims to assist counties affected by Hurricane Helene.

“Hurricane Helene caused immense damage to property owned by state and local governments, schools and nonprofits,” said Governor Cooper. “This Executive Order helps get them replacement property quickly and efficiently so they can continue with their missions.”

The storm led to significant property loss for state agencies, local governments, public schools, and nonprofits in the region. The Executive Order seeks to ease regulations on donating state surplus property both to governmental entities and non-profits involved in recovery efforts. This is intended to expedite the process of aiding Western North Carolina's recovery from the hurricane.

The Secretaries of DOA and DIT have been authorized to implement these actions. Agencies, political subdivisions, and public-school systems impacted by Helene are encouraged to contact the State Surplus Property Agency for available inventory. The order is effective immediately and will remain in effect during the State of Emergency.

The North Carolina Council of State has unanimously agreed with this Executive Order.
