Governor Roy Cooper attended the North Carolina State Fair today, participating in Canned Food Day by donating cans. During his visit, he stopped at a booth run by Bright Branch Farms from Henderson County, which has been affected by Hurricane Helene. He also engaged with crafters and artisans from Western North Carolina.

"The North Carolina State Fair is a favorite tradition for our state that brings together agriculture and community," said Governor Cooper. "Today, I was able to speak with residents of Western North Carolina who made it to the fair despite facing damages back home. We will continue working to get them the resources and relief they need."

Throughout his administration, Governor Cooper has attended the State Fair whenever it was held. The event aims to promote the state's agriculture, agribusiness, arts, crafts, and culture through its annual showcase.

Yesterday, Governor Cooper revealed his budget recommendation aimed at helping Western North Carolina recover more robustly. He proposed an initial $3.9 billion package for rebuilding critical infrastructure, homes, businesses, schools, and farms damaged during Hurricane Helene. The estimated damage stands at $53 billion, surpassing the figures from Hurricane Florence in 2018 and marking it as the largest in state history.

Since Hurricane Helene struck North Carolina, Governor Cooper has visited 14 affected counties. Efforts for recovery and relief are ongoing as local, state, and federal partners collaborate to assist those impacted.

Travel conditions in Western North Carolina remain challenging due to road closures caused by severe damage or restrictions for essential traffic such as utility vehicles and supply trucks. However, some areas are open to visitors which is vital for economic revival in the region. Prospective visitors are advised to check DriveNC.gov for road updates and contact local communities or businesses regarding their readiness to welcome guests.
