Governor Roy Cooper has taken steps to ease DMV requirements and fee collections for residents of Western North Carolina affected by Hurricane Helene. The Executive Order, issued yesterday, aims to support those impacted by the storm by suspending various application and late fees, lifting certain requirements for both individuals and businesses, and extending licenses for mechanics and businesses.
"Western North Carolina was deeply impacted by Hurricane Helene and many people have lost vehicles, licenses and other important documents," stated Governor Cooper. "This Executive Order will support the DMV’s critical work and help affected North Carolinians as they recover from this storm."
Hurricane Helene caused significant damage in the region, leading to the closure of several DMV facilities and destruction of numerous vehicles. Many residents are unable to access open facilities to obtain necessary services, resulting in delays in acquiring registration and other essential vehicle documents. The Executive Order facilitates disaster recovery efforts by expediting the issuance of vital motorist records, identification, and documentation while offering relief to those working to restore their property.
In addition to this measure, Governor Cooper has proposed a $3.9 billion budget package aimed at rebuilding infrastructure, homes, businesses, schools, and farms damaged by the hurricane. Initial damage estimates stand at $53 billion—three times the damages from Hurricane Florence in 2018—marking it as the largest in state history.
The North Carolina Council of State has unanimously agreed with this Executive Order.
