Kamala Harris has been a central figure in the Biden administration's border policies, often referred to as the "border czar." Since assuming her role in March 2021, she has overseen significant changes to U.S. border security measures, which included reversing many of former President Trump's policies.
The Harris-Biden administration enacted 94 executive actions within the first 100 days aimed at dismantling Trump's border security initiatives. These actions included halting the construction of the border wall and ending the “Remain in Mexico” policy.
In April 2021, illegal crossings surged by 128% compared to March, when Harris took office. Monthly illegal crossings have remained above 150,000 for nearly every month during her tenure. For comparison, illegal border crossings averaged around 50,000 per month under Trump.
The number of individuals released into the country also increased significantly under Harris's oversight. During Trump's administration, monthly releases were typically in two digits; under Harris-Biden, they have escalated to five- and six-digit figures.
Looking ahead to potential future policies if elected in November, Harris supports several measures including making every state a “sanctuary state,” granting mass amnesty for millions of undocumented immigrants already in the country, decriminalizing illegal border crossings, and providing taxpayer-funded health care coverage for undocumented immigrants. She has also expressed views on reducing deportations and restructuring ICE.
Critics argue that these policies have led to increased crime and safety concerns within U.S. communities. NCGOP Communications Director Matt Mercer stated: "Kamala Harris is singularly responsible for the Harris-Biden Administration's border policies that have made North Carolina a border state and made our communities less safe than it was four years ago."
