North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper honored NASA Astronaut Christina Koch, a North Carolina native, for her achievements and emphasized the importance of North Carolina's STEM education programs and robust public school system. During the ceremony, Governor Cooper presented Koch with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the state's highest honorary society. The event was attended by Congresswoman Deborah Ross, elected officials, educators, scientists, and students from The Exploris School.

"Astronaut Koch’s journey from North Carolina public schools to space is inspiring to all of us and shows the amazing opportunities that come from a public education in our state," remarked Governor Cooper. "When we invest in our public schools, we invest in the future of our state and planet."

NASA Astronaut Christina Koch expressed her gratitude, stating, "It is an honor to share the excitement of space with students and future explorers in my home state. These students will make up the Artemis generation and allow humanity to accomplish big things in space and on Earth in the future."

Congresswoman Deborah Ross commended Koch for her groundbreaking achievements, saying, "Christina is paving the way for important discoveries in space and breaking down barriers for women and girls everywhere who want to pursue a career in this field."

Koch, who grew up in North Carolina and attended schools in the state, highlighted her educational journey from Jacksonville to space exploration. She holds multiple degrees from North Carolina institutions and was selected as a NASA astronaut in 2013. Koch is set to return to space as Mission Specialist I of NASA’s Artemis II Mission, planned for September 2025.

Governor Cooper, who declared 2024 as the Year of Public Schools, is dedicated to showcasing North Carolina's strong public school system and its positive impact on the state's economy and communities. The Governor emphasized the importance of well-funded public education in preparing students for successful futures, including potential careers in space exploration.

The event also featured the presentation of a Loblolly Pine sapling grown from seeds that traveled to space on the Artemis I mission, symbolizing North Carolina's contribution to space exploration. Additionally, the Governor received a North Carolina flag that flew in space during Expeditions to the International Space Station.

As North Carolina looks towards the future of space exploration and education, events like these serve to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and astronauts.
