North Carolina Celebrates Strong STEM Education Programs with NASA Astronaut and State Officials

Governor Roy Cooper, NASA Astronaut Christina Koch, and North Carolina A&T Chancellor Harold Martin came together at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University to emphasize the state's robust STEM public education programs. The event aimed to showcase the importance of public education in shaping successful careers, with a focus on inspiring students to pursue opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Governor Cooper praised North Carolina's public schools, stating, “North Carolina’s strong public schools are setting our students up for success and encouraging them to shoot for the stars to reach their full potential.” He emphasized the need to invest in public schools to equip future generations for success in various fields, including space exploration and leadership roles.

Reflecting on her own educational journey, NASA Astronaut Christina Koch shared, “My time in North Carolina sparked my passion for exploration and helped me set my own journey to becoming an astronaut.” Koch highlighted the significance of a solid educational foundation in preparing individuals for significant accomplishments both in space and on Earth.

Chancellor Harold L. Martin Sr. of North Carolina A&T expressed enthusiasm about inspiring students towards careers in space exploration, stating, “We’re delighted to join with NASA Astronaut Christina Koch and Gov. Roy Cooper in drawing student attention to the exciting career possibilities in America’s space program.” He emphasized the university's history with NASA and its commitment to cultivating future leaders in space exploration.

Koch's journey from North Carolina public schools to becoming a NASA astronaut was highlighted during the event. Her academic background in electrical engineering and physics from North Carolina State University paved the way for her selection as a NASA astronaut in 2013. Koch's upcoming role as Mission Specialist I on NASA's Artemis II Mission, set to launch in September 2025, marks a significant milestone in her career.

Governor Cooper declared 2024 as the Year of Public Schools, dedicating the year to showcasing the strength of North Carolina's public education system. He aims to underscore the positive impact of well-funded public schools on the state's economy and communities, emphasizing the role of educators in preparing students for diverse future opportunities, including space exploration.
