Attorney General Josh Stein has taken legal action against Mariner Finance for alleged violations of multiple consumer protection laws, particularly concerning hidden fees charged to North Carolinians. Stein stated, “We will not tolerate predatory lenders charging hidden fees to take advantage of North Carolinians.” He added, “I am taking Mariner Finance to court to stand up for North Carolinians and their hard-earned money.”
The lawsuit, filed by a bipartisan group of attorneys general, accuses Mariner Finance of misleading consumers about add-on products and engaging in aggressive sales tactics. The company allegedly added significant amounts to consumers' total debt through these undisclosed fees and products, leading them into a cycle of debt that can be difficult to overcome.
Mariner Finance, with 39 branches in North Carolina, has been criticized for mailing unsolicited "live checks" to consumers and encouraging them to refinance and take on additional debt, often without their best interests in mind. Consumers who believe they have been affected by Mariner's practices are urged to file a complaint with the Consumer Protection Division of the Attorney General's office.
Attorney General Josh Stein is supported in this legal action by several other Attorneys General from different states. The lawsuit seeks court intervention to address the alleged violations and protect consumers from predatory lending practices.
