Governor Roy Cooper of North Carolina has announced a significant milestone in the state's Medicaid expansion program, with over 400,000 North Carolinians now enrolled to receive lifesaving health care. The Governor emphasized the importance of this achievement, stating, "So many younger, working people desperately need affordable health insurance and Medicaid Expansion fills the bill for thousands of them and with people all the way through age 64."
N.C. Health and Human Services Secretary Kody Kinsley expressed pride in the success of the program, stating, "We got it done and we got it done well!" Kinsley highlighted the transformative impact of access to healthcare on the lives of North Carolinians, noting that individuals are now able to receive vital medical services, prescriptions, and dental care.
The rapid enrollment rate in North Carolina has surpassed expectations, with an average of more than 1,000 people signing up for Medicaid expansion per day since December 1. This pace outpaces other states that have expanded Medicaid, demonstrating the strong demand for affordable health coverage in the state.
The new enrollees in the Medicaid expansion program primarily consist of young adults between 19 and 29 years old, many of whom work either part-time or full-time. Additionally, a significant number of enrollees reside in rural communities, with Robeson County leading in terms of enrollment per population.
Since the launch of the program on December 1, Medicaid has already facilitated over 705,000 prescriptions for various health conditions and covered more than $11.2 million in dental services claims for the enrollees. The NCDHHS Medicaid Expansion website offers information on eligibility, FAQs, application procedures, and updates for those interested in enrolling in the program.
The success of North Carolina's Medicaid expansion reflects a significant step towards ensuring access to essential healthcare services for a large number of residents in the state.
