Governor Roy Cooper has spoken out against the extreme Republican voucher plan in North Carolina, outlining the threats it poses to public schools and students in the state. In a new video release, Governor Cooper expressed his concerns about the plan, stating, “The more parents learn about this irresponsible voucher plan, the more they’re concerned for the risks it poses to their children, our communities and our state.”

The Republican legislators' plan involves diverting $4 billion of taxpayer money over the next decade to fund private schools, which raises alarms for Governor Cooper. He emphasized his support for public schools, where 84% of North Carolina children attend, and criticized the lack of accountability and extreme social agendas in some private schools benefiting from taxpayer dollars.

Under the voucher program, public schools stand to lose significant funding as students opt for private school education. Governor Cooper warned that in the first year alone, private schools could siphon over $200 million in state funding from public schools. He pointed out the disparities between public and private schools, highlighting that private schools are not required to meet the same standards as public schools.

Studies from other states with similar voucher programs have shown concerning trends. In states like Louisiana, Indiana, Ohio, and Washington, DC, participating students saw academic declines in math, reading, and other subjects. These findings raise doubts about the effectiveness and impact of private school vouchers on students' academic performance.

Governor Cooper also raised concerns about private schools with extreme social agendas receiving taxpayer money, while some of the top private schools in the state do not accept state vouchers. He called for a moratorium on private school vouchers until public schools in North Carolina are adequately funded.

As North Carolina grapples with the future of its education system, Governor Cooper's stance against the GOP voucher plan underscores the importance of prioritizing public education and accountability in the use of taxpayer funds.
