Temperatures are predicted to be below freezing through the rest of December and into January. With colder temperatures comes the threat of frozen or busted water service lines.

Here are 7 ways to help prevent frozen or busted pipes:

  1. Ensure your garden hoses are disconnected from hose spigots.
  2. Keep the kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors open to circulate warmer air around the pipes.
  3. Open one faucet to a slow drip…running water does not freeze
  4. Maintain an indoor temperature of at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
  5. Consider insulating pipes located in unheated areas such as garages, basements, attics, or crawl spaces.
  6. Inspect your home for cracks or openings that could let in cold air and then seal those areas.
  7. Irrigation customers should winterize their systems by closing the main shut-off valve to the system, close the shut-off valves on the backflow preventer, open the quarter-inch test ball valve to drain the body of the backflow preventer, and insulate the assembly with insulation (do not block the relief valve vent with insulation) or simply remove the backflow preventer entirely from the system for the winter.
