City to Consider Naming Opportunity for Play Plaza at Dorothea Dix Park

Play plaza plan

City of Raleigh recently issued the following announcement.

At its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, December 7, 2021, the Raleigh City Council will hold a public hearing to hear comment on a proposal to name the Play Plaza project at Dorothea Dix Park the “Gipson Play Plaza.”  The naming is being considered in recognition of a gift of $10,000,000 towards the Plaza Play project, gifted by Pat and Tom Gipson to the Dix Park Conservancy for the benefit of the Play Plaza project.

The Play Plaza consists of a 18.5 +/- acre area located within Dorothea Dix Park, adjacent to Lake Wheeler Road between Goode Street and Umstead Drive.  The proposed name will be applied to the Play Plaza for a period of thirty (30) years following execution of a written agreement committing the funds to the project.

The public hearing will be held during the evening City Council session, starting at 7 p.m.  Members of the public wishing to speak at the hearing may sign up in the same manner as for other hearings on the December 7 agenda.  This hearing is being set pursuant to the provisions of City Council Resolution 2021-278.
