An attempt at a bipartisan compromise on a Medicare expansion for rural residents in North Carolina has two components that are meeting resistance in the state House, Dawn Baumgartner Vaughan has reported for the News and Observer.
House Bill 655, called NC Health Care for Working Families, includes a work requirement and a premium of 2 percent of an individual's income. Republicans in the House worry that any increase to Medicare will result in a higher budget deficit.
Republican Senate Leader Phil Berger opposes the bill, saying it is a Medicaid expansion bill, Vaughan reported. Others in the party worry about those working poor who cannot afford coverage.
