Pedestrians in Raleigh might notice a new safety initiative in the state capital’s downtown area as the state Office of State Human Resources announced this week the new WalkSmartNC program.
The state is asking people to help to make the program a success.
“Drivers sometimes rush pedestrians in crosswalks or don’t see them because they are driving too fast. And pedestrians sometimes are too distracted by their phones or devices to be sufficiently aware of their surroundings,” State Human Resources Director Barbara Gibson said in a press release announcing the new program. “It’s not unusual to see other pedestrians shout or reach out and grab someone to stop them from walking right into traffic.”
The program seeks to prevent pedestrian-vehicle accidents and near misses.
Anyone who walks in the downtown state government complex is asked to take part in the online Downtown Raleigh Pedestrian Safety Study.
