The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 on May 8 in Game 3 of their second-round playoff series at Xfinity Mobile Arena, propelled by two power play goals and a shorthanded tally.

The result gives the Hurricanes a commanding position in the series, highlighting the importance of special teams play during this stage of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Carolina’s ability to capitalize on both power plays and penalty kills has been a key factor in their postseason success.

Carolina took an early lead with Jordan Staal scoring on a power play late in the first period. Although Philadelphia quickly responded with a goal from Trevor Zegras, Jalen Chatfield restored Carolina’s advantage before intermission with a shorthanded effort. In the third period, Andrei Svechnikov added another power-play goal, and Nikolaj Ehlers scored on a breakaway to secure victory for the visitors. Goaltender Frederik Andersen made 18 saves for his seventh consecutive playoff win.

Staal reached his 40th career playoff point with the Hurricanes, tying Jaccob Slavin and surpassing Teuvo Teravainen. He also joined his brother Eric among franchise leaders for playoff appearances and points—a feat previously matched only by Henrik and Daniel Sedin for one team. Andersen became just the twelfth goaltender in National Hockey League history to start a postseason with seven straight wins, joining Igor Shesterkin (2024) and Marc-Andre Fleury (2008), according to the official website.

Afterwards, players commented on their performance. “It took a little life out of the building, which is always nice. Our start was good. We probably had a few too many turnovers and Freddie bailed us out, but then we kind of built a game from there,” said Staal about scoring first again. Jordan Martinook said about Staal: “It’s just a pleasure to watch him… I feel like he’s just getting better the older he gets… Obviously, a huge game tonight by them.” Svechnikov remarked: “Obviously it gives you a little bit of confidence… Especially scoring on the power play; we got two goals today… we’ve just got to continue working.” Shayne Gostisbehere added regarding special teams adjustments: “(The Flyers) play a specific system… Just (get) back to basics when you’re struggling.” Chatfield said: “Huge. We know this time of year… that can win games.”

Coach Rod Brind’Amour discussed keeping focus heading into Game 4: “It starts in the room with your leadership… We’ve been able to do that all year… The guys understand we’re not going to win if we don’t put our best foot forward.” The next game is scheduled for Saturday evening as Carolina looks to close out this round.

The Hurricanes’ achievements build upon their legacy as former Stanley Cup champions—having won hockey’s top prize in 2006—and having inducted notable contributors such as Eric Staal into their Hall of Fame according to their official website. The team plays its home games at Lenovo Center in Raleigh—a venue that seats up to 20,000 people and hosts more than 150 events each year while contributing over $200 million annually through events and community engagement according to its official website.
