Senator Phil Berger has recently shared his perspectives on educational policies and legislative efforts in North Carolina through a series of tweets. His comments, posted over the span of two days, address various bills and actions taken by Governor Josh Stein, alongside references to former President Donald Trump’s policies.
On July 2, Senator Berger expressed his unwavering commitment to “educational freedom” in North Carolina. He criticized Governor Stein’s veto of a bill supporting school choice and charter schools, stating that it would be overridden in the Senate. “Educational freedom was a hard-won fight in NC,” he wrote, emphasizing his determination to continue advocating for universal school choice despite opposition from figures such as Sam Page.
In a tweet on July 3, Berger discussed Senate Bill 227 which aims to reinforce the core curriculum focus in public schools while prohibiting discriminatory practices. He urged Governor Stein to sign the bill into law as a measure to protect freedom of speech within K-12 public education. “Gov. Stein needs to sign this into law,” Berger asserted.
Later on July 3, Berger criticized Governor Stein for not supporting House Bill 805, which seeks to define two sexes in state law—a move reminiscent of an action taken by President Trump during his administration. Berger argued that by opposing the bill, Gov. Stein aligned with what he described as “radical ideology.” “Gov. Josh Stein had the opportunity to support women and girls across North Carolina today,” he commented.
Governor Josh Stein is currently serving as the governor of North Carolina.
