Senator Phil Berger, a Republican representing North Carolina’s 26th Senate district, recently posted a series of statements on social media addressing the legacy of a local leader, ongoing education policy debates, and the state’s response to drug epidemics.
On August 10, 2025, Berger reflected on the passing of former Greensboro mayor Jim Melvin. In his post, he wrote: “Jim Melvin was a visionary public servant. Long after he completed his decade as Greensboro’s mayor, Jim remained a strong, determined advocate for Greensboro and the Triad. Our region’s recent successes are the result of his tireless efforts. Pat and I mourn his passing and”.
The following day, August 11, Berger commented on legislative priorities regarding educational freedom in North Carolina. He stated: “You can count on the General Assembly to move the needle forward when our Governor tries to set us back. We continue to fight for educational freedom, and @realDonaldTrump’s school choice tax credit is a key component of that. Which is why I will be leading the N.C. Senate in”.
On August 12, Berger addressed concerns about illegal drugs in North Carolina and attributed part of the crisis to federal border policies. He wrote: “Too many families have been torn apart because of illegal drugs and the opioid and fentanyl epidemics fueled by the Biden-Harris open border policies. North Carolina Republicans have taken concrete steps to go after drug traffickers by increasing criminal penalties and”.
Phil Berger began serving in the state senate in 2023 after being elected to represent District 26, succeeding Dave Craven.
