Rep. Brenden Jones, a Republican member of the North Carolina State House representing the 46th district since 2017, has recently posted several statements on his social media account criticizing certain books available or promoted in elementary schools.
On December 15, 2025, Jones wrote, “My staff uncovered that Buncombe County Schools is making books like ‘She, He, They, Them’ and ‘The Gender Identity Workbook for Kids’ available in their elementary school libraries.
Looks like you’re on deck Buncombe. #ncpol https://t.co/idRDgfXzqBhttps://t.co/WRMQYMcQB5“.
Two days later, on December 17, 2025, he followed up with another statement directed at a local political group: “Glad to know that Carolina Forward defends child grooming.
Instead of being angry about elementary school students being introduced to nude pictures in a recommended book by their school district they’re mad about my words. #ncpol https://t.co/NSPnKhNO3uhttps://t.co/6xguvRTOGG“.
Later the same day, Jones addressed criticism of his earlier comments with a clarification: “Let’s set the record straight: I never said the books were in their library, that’s your lie. What I said, and what’s true, is that CHCCS still to this day promotes this filth to elementary students on their own website.
We got the receipts just in case you need them. #ncpol https://t.co/jTypG7WdXe“.
Jones has served as a state representative since winning election in 2017 after replacing Ken Waddell. The recent series of posts have drawn attention to debates over educational materials and content made accessible or promoted by public schools in North Carolina.
