Wake County Public Health and Wake County Animal Control have confirmed that a raccoon tested positive for rabies after biting a dog on June 19. The incident took place on Windsor Trail in Raleigh, with the affected dog being up to date on its rabies vaccination. After the bite, the dog received a booster shot and is reportedly doing well.
Residents in the area who may have come into contact with a raccoon are advised to call the Wake County Communicable Disease line at 919-250-4462. Immediate medical attention is recommended for anyone whose pets or themselves have been bitten or scratched.
“Rabies is a serious public health concern, and we’re grateful that this pet was protected through vaccination,” said Wake County Commissioner Tara Waters. “This incident is an important reminder of why it’s so critical to keep your pets up to date on their rabies shots.”
Wake County encourages residents with outdoor-accessible pets to ensure they are current on their rabies vaccinations. Any unusual animal behavior should be reported to Animal Control officials.
