Governor Josh Stein has emphasized the importance of safeguarding children in North Carolina from abuse and neglect. He was joined by Attorney General Jeff Jackson, North Carolina Department of Public Safety Secretary Eddie Buffaloe, and North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Dev Sangvai at the SAFEChild Advocacy Center. The officials underscored April as Child Abuse Prevention Month and April 28 as Children’s Advocacy Center Day.

“Every year there are more than 100,000 reports of child abuse and neglect in North Carolina,” said Governor Josh Stein. He expressed his commitment to justice and healing for affected children while reinforcing the state’s commitment to protecting them from abuse.

Attorney General Jeff Jackson stated, “We all want our children to grow up safe, healthy, and with every opportunity to succeed.” He highlighted his focus on helping child survivors heal and hold abusers accountable.

Secretary Eddie Buffaloe stressed the importance of providing children a safe environment and encouraging them to report abuse. “It is vital that kids have a chance to report abuse to law enforcement,” he said. He pointed out the necessity of taking preventative measures against abuse.

Secretary Dev Sangvai acknowledged efforts by organizations like SAFE Child North Carolina, which provide resources and support to affected families. He stressed collaborative efforts to provide safe environments for children.

SAFEchild Executive Director Cristin DeRonja emphasized the need for resources to help children recover from abuse. “A child who experiences abuse requires decades to recover and heal,” she said, appreciating Governor Stein’s commitment to preventing child abuse.

Governor Stein, at the center, signed proclamations recognizing the special dates related to child abuse prevention. He has proposed a budget that includes investment in programs like the Positive Parenting Program, aimed at strengthening parenting skills to prevent maltreatment.

The Governor previously worked to pass the SAFE Child Act as Attorney General, ensuring mandatory reporting of abuse to law enforcement. The initiative was part of his ongoing efforts to protect children in the state.

Residents are encouraged to report suspected child abuse and have access to resources to recognize and act on signs of abuse.
