The North Carolina Republican Party has renewed its demand for the resignation of Democratic State Representative Julie von Haefen. This follows a controversial social media post from Rep. von Haefen that appeared to express support for the assassination of former President Donald Trump.
Rep. von Haefen acknowledged the post was hers and subsequently deleted her account on X amid widespread criticism.
Several prominent Democrats have remained silent on the issue, including Jeff Jackson, Roy Cooper, Robert Reives, and Sydney Batch. Apex Mayor Jacques Gilbert was one of the few Democrats to speak out, stating: “While freedom of expression is a protected right, imagery that invokes violence crosses a moral line. I do not condone this. It promotes division, not dialogue – and stands in direct contrast to the values we hold dear in Apex.”
Rep. von Haefen has not issued an apology for her post but explained: “Yesterday, I posted a video on social media containing crowd photos from the No Kings protest in Raleigh. One of the images of a protestor holding a sign was inappropriate, and I later edited the video to remove the photo.”
The call for resignation remains firm from her critics who believe her actions were unacceptable.
