The North Carolina Republican Party (NCGOP) has urged Democratic State Representative Julie von Haefen to resign following a controversial social media post. The post, shared by von Haefen at a “No Kings” Rally in Raleigh, depicted President Donald Trump being beheaded with a guillotine.

This rally coincided with the U.S. Army’s 250th Birthday Celebration. The timing of von Haefen’s post was particularly notable as it came shortly after two Minnesota state representatives were targeted in assassination attempts, resulting in one fatality.

NCGOP Chairman Jason Simmons commented on the situation: “The posts Rep. von Haefen shared do not show the judgement or temperament of someone to hold public office. For the good of her constituents to have effective representation, she should resign.”

N.C. House Speaker Destin Hall also addressed the incident, stating: “Her disgraceful behavior fails to meet the standards expected from House members and sets a dangerous precedent in an already volatile political climate. I am examining next steps with our legislative attorneys to ensure this behavior does not continue.”
