The North Carolina Democratic Party is set to host a “Unity Dinner” on Saturday, with Illinois Governor JB Pritzker as the main attraction. The event raises questions about what lessons North Carolina Democrats aim to glean from Governor Pritzker’s policies and leadership in Illinois.

Governor Pritzker has been noted for his focus on a potential 2028 presidential bid amidst challenges faced by his state. Under his administration, Illinois’ budget has increased to $55 billion, including new taxes such as those on single-use plastics and gasoline. These fiscal measures have drawn criticism, particularly from small business owners who claim that policies like the tipped minimum wage increase are burdensome.

CBS Chicago reported that some restaurant owners are struggling due to these wage increases, which force them to either raise prices or reduce staffing. Similar initiatives have seen mixed results elsewhere, with Washington D.C.’s Mayor Muriel Bowser calling for a repeal of a comparable policy due to its negative impact on employees and businesses.

Financial management under Governor Pritzker has also come under scrutiny. Illinois faces billion-dollar deficits, with state and local tax burdens ranked highest nationwide according to Illinois Policy. Additionally, domestic migration data shows significant population loss in Illinois, ranking it 48th among states in terms of population change due to people moving out.

A report from NPR Illinois indicated that over half of the state’s residents considered leaving in 2019. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates show that between July 2023 and June 2024, Illinois experienced a net loss of over 56,000 residents moving to other states.

Further financial strain is attributed to spending on undocumented immigrants, with costs exceeding $3 billion according to an estimate. A state audit revealed underestimated expenses related to healthcare programs for undocumented individuals costing more than $1.6 billion since 2020.

In light of these issues, Matt Mercer, Communications Director for the North Carolina GOP, commented: “Hosting JB Pritzker is confirmation North Carolina Democrats have moved to the extreme, radical Left and do not care about the health, safety, and well-being of North Carolina families.”
