The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Washington Capitals 5-2 in Game 4 of their second-round playoff series, securing a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven matchup. This victory maintains their perfect record at Lenovo Center this postseason.
Shayne Gostisbehere opened the scoring for the Hurricanes with a goal at 10:24 in the first period. Despite facing penalties that threatened their lead, Seth Jarvis extended it by scoring early in the second period.
The third period saw a back-and-forth battle. After conceding a goal to Washington, Taylor Hall restored Carolina’s two-goal advantage with a breakaway score. When Alex Ovechkin scored on a power play for Washington, Sean Walker responded with his first postseason goal to secure Carolina’s lead. Andrei Svechnikov sealed the win with an empty-net goal.
Frederik Andersen was instrumental in goal, stopping 19 of 21 shots and achieving his sixth win in eight starts this postseason.
Gostisbehere’s goal marked his third of these playoffs, tying him for third-most goals by a Hurricanes/Whalers defenseman in a single postseason. Seth Jarvis tied Sebastian Aho’s franchise record for most playoff points by a player aged 23 or younger. Aho also became the first player in franchise history to reach 50 assists and 80 points in the postseason.
Taylor Hall contributed significantly with his second multi-point performance of the playoffs, including scoring the game-winning goal. Sean Walker recorded his first two career playoff points during this match.
Carolina has now won five consecutive home games, approaching their franchise record of seven set in 2022.
Coach Rod Brind’Amour praised his team’s composure and maturity during challenging moments: “There’s no panic when things don’t go our way.” Sean Walker highlighted the importance of responding to opponents’ goals: “You’ve got to answer when teams are making their push.”
Dmitry Orlov emphasized defensive efforts as crucial for playoff success: “It’s what you try to do…leave everything out there and sacrifice for your teammates.”
Seth Jarvis commended Taylor Hall’s performance: “He won the Hart [Trophy] for a reason…to come up in a situation like this…was awesome to see.” Hall expressed satisfaction with contributing: “It’s what you kind of train for and look forward to.”
Brind’Amour also acknowledged Walker’s growth: “Walks has just been solid…he’s earned that ice time and trust from the group.”
Looking ahead, Seth Jarvis remains cautious about underestimating Washington: “There’s still another game…we’re expecting their best next game.”
The Hurricanes will practice on Wednesday before traveling to Washington for Game 5 on Thursday.
