The Carolina Hurricanes came from behind to defeat the New Jersey Devils 3-1 in Game 2 of their playoff series, taking a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven matchup. Frederik Andersen’s 25 saves and Jordan Martinook’s two-point contribution were key to the victory.
The Devils struck first with Jesper Bratt scoring early in the first period, but Shayne Gostisbehere responded for the Hurricanes, tying the game in the second period. Martinook then scored the eventual game-winner with a shorthanded goal. Seth Jarvis sealed the victory with an empty-netter.
Andersen, now with 40 career playoff wins, joins an elite group of goaltenders. Martinook’s shorthanded goal added to his impressive playoff record against the Devils. Sebastian Aho tied Teemu Selanne for sixth in all-time playoff assists by a Finnish player, and Seth Jarvis matched Aho’s playoff goal record among young franchise players.
Jackson Blake earned his first playoff point, while Jaccob Slavin set a franchise record with his 73rd playoff appearance. The Hurricanes have tallied 10 shorthanded playoff goals since 2018-19, leading the NHL in this category during that period.
Both Andersen and Martinook praised their teammates’ efforts during the game. Rod Brind’Amour, the Hurricanes’ head coach, commented on the team’s improvement after the first period.
The Hurricanes will have a brief break before the series shifts to New Jersey for Game 3. If necessary, Game 5 will take place in Raleigh.
Frederik Andersen commented on focusing during New Jersey’s pushes: “The biggest thing for a goalie, but any player, is to focus on what’s in front of you and the next shift or the next chance against. I try to be in that moment and do your best. Trust that your ability is good enough to lead to success.”
Rod Brind’Amour praised Jordan Martinook’s performance, noting: “I can’t think of enough good things to say about that game. It might have been his most impactful game as a Hurricane, and he’s had a bunch, especially in big moments.”
Regarding the series, Shayne Gostisbehere added: “Obviously, we’re going on the road and they’ve got the last change. Some teams take that extra step [at home]. We’re not going to sit back. They know what kind of team we are. They know what kind of team they are.”
The Hurricanes’ next game is scheduled for Friday in New Jersey.
