The Carolina Hurricanes resumed practice on Sunday after a short break, preparing for the Eastern Conference Final. The team is still waiting to find out whether they will face the Florida Panthers or the Toronto Maple Leafs, as those two teams are set to play a decisive Game 7.
Taylor Hall commented on the team’s focus, stating, “We don’t even know who we’re playing yet, so we’re just keeping our window small. [We wanted to] come out, have a good practice today, and we’ll see who we play tonight.” He emphasized that regardless of their opponent, the team is concentrating on their own performance and health.
Coach Rod Brind’Amour acknowledged that either potential opponent would present a challenge. A victory by Florida would give Carolina home ice advantage for the start of the series. If Toronto wins, the series will begin in Canada.
Brind’Amour expressed optimism about defenseman Jalen Chatfield’s recovery from an undisclosed injury but admitted uncertainty about his availability for Tuesday’s game. Chatfield missed Game 5 against Washington, allowing Alexander Nikishin to make his NHL debut. Nikishin’s performance was praised by teammate Shayne Gostisbehere: “He did great out there… He played some big minutes and made some great plays.”
In addition to Chatfield, Dmitry Orlov also missed Sunday’s practice. Brind’Amour hopes both players will be ready for Tuesday’s game.
The Hurricanes are grateful for their four-day break after winning their previous series in five games. Brind’Amour remarked on the importance of rest: “It’s obviously good. The less wear and tear, the better.” Logan Stankoven noted that the team stays active during breaks with workouts and high-tempo practices.
Taylor Hall highlighted the benefits of having time off between games: “There’s a lot of benefit to (the break)… For us to sleep in our own beds a couple of times, get a workout in, get a practice… it’s a good schedule.”
The NHL has announced details for the Conference Final Round schedule and broadcast information.
