The Carolina Hurricanes faced a setback in their playoff series against the Washington Capitals, losing 3-1 in Game 2 at Capital One Arena. Despite showing resilience with a late push, the Hurricanes were unable to overcome the deficit.

In the first period, Carolina demonstrated early dominance with shot and territorial advantages. However, similar to Game 1, the Capitals took the lead in the second period when Connor McMichael capitalized on a breakaway opportunity after an unfortunate bounce in the neutral zone.

Washington extended their lead early in the third period with a power-play goal from John Carlson. The Hurricanes responded midway through the period with Shayne Gostisbehere scoring on a power play, marking his fourth power-play point of this postseason. Despite several opportunities, Carolina could not score again, and a late empty-net goal by Washington sealed their victory.

Frederik Andersen recorded 18 saves on 20 shots for Carolina. Sebastian Aho assisted on Gostisbehere’s goal, achieving his 21st career playoff power-play point and surpassing Rod Brind’Amour and Eric Staal for the most in franchise history.

Reflecting on their performance, Rod Brind’Amour acknowledged Washington’s strong game but emphasized that Carolina must improve. “We weren’t great, that’s for sure,” he said. “You’ve got to give Washington credit; they played a much better game.”

Jordan Staal noted issues during certain periods: “I thought our first was good. Second period was no good.” He added that they struggled with turnovers and control in their end.

Sean Walker highlighted positives from controlling momentum when playing effectively: “When we were playing our game, we really controlled the momentum of the game.”

Returning home tied after two games on the road, Jordan Staal expressed optimism about leveraging fan support: “Always nice to be in front of our fans… We’re going to have to start fresh at home here.”

Rod Brind’Amour reiterated expectations for improvement: “We knew it was going to be hard… Can we be better? Yeah, that’s the good news.”

The Hurricanes will return home for Game 3 at Lenovo Center scheduled for Saturday evening.
