The Carolina Hurricanes have advanced to the Eastern Conference Final for the second time in three years after defeating the Washington Capitals in five games during the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Hurricanes started strong with a road split against the Metropolitan Division champions and maintained their momentum at home, ultimately securing a 3-1 series lead. Their decisive victory in Washington confirmed their place among the NHL’s final four teams.
Jaccob Slavin played a crucial role by scoring an overtime goal to give Carolina an early series advantage. Despite a setback with a 3-1 loss at Capital One Arena, Frederik Andersen’s goaltending was pivotal, as he stopped all 21 shots from Washington for his fourth career playoff shutout. Andrei Svechnikov sealed the series with a game-winning goal late in regulation.
The Hurricanes’ postseason record now stands at 8-2, including an undefeated streak at home. Mike Kelly noted on social media that “the Canes are off to the Eastern Conference Final,” highlighting their dominance in zone time and shot attempts.
Washington Capitals were held to just seven goals over five games despite being one of the highest-scoring teams during the regular season. Sean Walker attributed this success to team-wide commitment: “It’s just kind of the buy-in, top-down… we’re all playing the same system and that’s a really suffocating game.”
Spencer Carbery acknowledged Carolina’s relentless pressure and defensive strategy: “They don’t get rattled… you can just tell the experience and calmness of their group.” Rod Brind’Amour praised both veteran players and new additions for buying into the team’s system.
Frederik Andersen was instrumental throughout, boasting a .937 save percentage and allowing two or fewer goals per game. Jordan Staal commended Andersen: “He’s been a stud his whole career… He was great all series long.” Brind’Amour emphasized Andersen’s importance: “That’s what great goaltending does for a team.”
Andrei Svechnikov led offensively with eight goals in these playoffs, ranking second among NHL skaters. Staal remarked on Svechnikov’s performance: “He’s been on it every night… being hard to play against.” Brind’Amour stressed Svechnikov’s critical role: “Any team that’s playing now, you’ve got to have your top guys going or you’re not still here.”
Svechnikov, along with Shayne Gostisbehere and Seth Jarvis, contributed significantly to Carolina’s scoring efforts. Brind’Amour highlighted their collective contributions: “We definitely need everyone to contribute.”
