Governor Josh Stein addressed the NC Sheriffs’ Association at their annual spring conference, expressing gratitude for their efforts to maintain public safety in North Carolina. During the meeting, he detailed initiatives from his proposed 2025-2027 budget aimed at addressing staffing challenges and establishing specialized units for pressing statewide issues.
“Serving in law enforcement is a special calling – one of service and bravery. We ask them to run towards danger when the rest of us might flee,” stated Governor Stein. “I will continue to use every tool possible to advocate for law enforcement officers so that they have the resources to do their jobs well and make North Carolina safer and stronger.”
The budget outlines plans to enhance safety for families through multiple measures. It proposes increasing salaries for state law enforcement personnel, correctional officers, and youth counselors, along with signing bonuses for BLET graduates. Further provisions include the creation of a Fentanyl Control Unit to investigate narcotics distribution and a Cold Case Unit focused on resolving unsolved sexual assault cases.
These proposed investments in public safety reflect Stein’s commitment to equipping law enforcement with necessary resources to do their jobs effectively.
