Today, Governor Josh Stein convened with state and local officials, business leaders, and housing experts to explore strategies for increasing access to affordable housing in North Carolina. The discussions focused on alleviating the burden of high housing costs across the state.
Governor Stein emphasized the importance of affordable housing as North Carolina continues to grow. “Our state is growing, and people need a safe and affordable place to live,” he stated. “We will remain focused on identifying solutions to lower the cost of housing for North Carolinians at every stage of life and work to ensure every person has a safe place to call home.”
The governor’s commitment is reflected in his 2025-2027 budget proposal, which allocates $35 million annually to the Housing Trust Fund. This fund serves as a flexible resource aimed at leveraging private sector and federal contributions for creating more housing options for low-income families, veterans, seniors, and people with disabilities. Additionally, the budget includes $15 million earmarked for the Workforce Loan Program to support affordable housing construction and repair projects.
Governor Stein also backs bipartisan legislative efforts in the General Assembly aimed at reducing bureaucratic obstacles that hinder home building processes.
Furthermore, addressing housing challenges in western North Carolina remains a priority for Governor Stein. His second Helene recovery budget proposal sets aside $113 million dedicated to advancing housing recovery efforts in this region and assisting families facing difficulties with rent, mortgage, or utility payments.
