Governor Josh Stein visited W.A. Pattillo Middle School in Tarboro to deliver school supplies gathered through the Governor’s annual School Supply Drive. The event brought together educators, students, and local officials.
During his visit, Governor Stein addressed the ongoing budget impasse in the state legislature and its impact on education funding. He stated, “As teachers prepare for a new school year, they are reaching into their own pockets to ensure their classrooms are well-equipped. This school supply drive is a way we can all help to lighten their load. Thank you to everyone who has donated to this worthy cause. We must continue to work together to support our teachers and students with meaningful investments and support.”
North Carolina ranks second among states for the amount teachers spend out of pocket on classroom supplies. In response, Governor Stein’s proposed 2025-2027 budget includes measures such as a $300 stipend for school supplies, pay raises for teachers, and reinstatement of master’s pay. He continues to urge the General Assembly to pass a comprehensive state budget that prioritizes public schools.
The Office of the Governor has collaborated with organizations including the State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU), Communities in Schools of North Carolina, NCPTA, and the Boys and Girls Club of North Carolina over several years to promote donations of school supplies across the state. SECU branches placed donation boxes at locations statewide while encouraging customer participation. The Office of the Governor and cabinet agencies also collected contributions during this year’s drive, which ran from June 30 through August 1.
