Governor Josh Stein has declared a State of Emergency in North Carolina as Hurricane Erin approaches the coast. The declaration mobilizes state resources and personnel to assist coastal communities ahead of expected impacts from the storm.
“Hurricane Erin will bring threats of coastal flooding, beach erosion, and dangerous surf conditions,” said Governor Josh Stein. “North Carolinians along the coast should get prepared now, ensure their emergency kit is ready, and listen to local emergency guidelines and alerts in the event they need to evacuate.”
Local States of Emergency have been issued for Dare County and Hyde County. Mandatory evacuations are underway for Ocracoke and Hatteras islands. Those who have evacuated can seek shelter at the State Operated Disaster Shelter at 113 Wilcox Street in Warrenton, NC, which allows pets.
Forecasts indicate that Hurricane Erin is likely to grow stronger over the next two days as it moves northward. Authorities expect waves between 15 and 20 feet, extensive beach erosion, coastal flooding affecting roads and structures, and hazardous rip currents throughout the week. Tropical storm force winds are predicted to reach areas including the Outer Banks on Wednesday and Thursday.
Residents are urged to finalize preparations along the coast. Officials recommend following updates from sources such as the National Weather Service, local media outlets, or local emergency management agencies for accurate information. People are advised to follow evacuation orders if issued by local authorities.
Evacuees should bring disaster kits with essential items like important documents, cash, prescriptions, phone chargers, and insurance policies. Residents in affected areas should plan evacuation routes in advance; more details can be found at https://knowyourzone.nc.gov/.
