Governor Josh Stein has taken a significant step toward bolstering North Carolina’s workforce and apprenticeship programs. On March 25, 2025, he announced an executive order establishing a Council on Workforce and Apprenticeships. The council will be chaired by Secretary of Commerce Lee Lilley, State Senator Eddie Settle, and NC Community Colleges President Dr. Jeffrey Cox.
“Our state’s greatest asset is our people, and to invest in our future, we must invest in our people,” said Governor Stein during his visit to Forsyth Tech Community College. “No state will outwork North Carolina when it comes to developing our workforce.”
Secretary Lee Lilley emphasized the importance of North Carolina’s workforce to its business climate. “North Carolina’s workforce is the backbone of our thriving business climate,” he stated. He expressed enthusiasm about collaborating on strategies that benefit both workers and businesses.
Senator Eddie Settle highlighted the need for skilled workers across the state. “There is a lot of good work being done around North Carolina’s main streets and towns, and they need skilled workers to reap the benefits of our growing economy,” he said.
Dr. Jeffrey Cox spoke about the role of community colleges in expanding apprenticeship programs. “I am proud to co-chair this Council…to ensure our NC Community College System continues to expand apprenticeship and other workforce credential programs,” he said.
Governor Stein reiterated his commitment to providing opportunities for all residents regardless of their background. His recent initiatives include visiting Wake Tech Community College, proclaiming February as Career and Technical Education Month, launching the FLEET Program with Surry-Yadkin Works and Altec Industries, and proposing a state budget that allocates $256 million for workforce development including free community college for high-demand fields.
