Governor Josh Stein attended a ceremony in Rocky Mount to recognize the graduation of 149 new North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) Driver License Examiners. This group is the largest class to complete the Driver License Examiner Basic School, according to state officials.
“Hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians visit the DMV each year, and they deserve a fast and easy experience so they can get on with their day,” said Governor Josh Stein. “I’m proud of today’s graduates, grateful for their willingness to serve our people, and determined to keep pushing forward so that every North Carolinian can count on a faster, more efficient DMV.”
DMV Commissioner Paul Tine also spoke at the event. “These graduates will bring significant value to DMV offices across the state of North Carolina,” he said. “Every new examiner means shorter lines, quicker service, and a better experience for customers. We still have work to do, but I’m proud of the progress we’re making to improve every part of the DMV.”
The NCDMV recently addressed a backlog in training by conducting seven-week courses for new examiners this fall. In August, Governor Stein signed House Bill 125, which provided funding for 64 additional examiner positions at the DMV; all these roles have now been filled.
Additionally, House Bill 245 was signed into law in September by Governor Stein. The bill expanded online renewal options for driver’s licenses in North Carolina. Since then, nearly 80,000 residents have renewed their licenses online within nine weeks after implementation—a change aimed at reducing wait times at physical locations.
State officials report that vacancies among DMV staff have dropped below five percent out of a total workforce of 632 positions.
Information about ongoing improvements can be found in the DMV’s five-year strategic plan and its updated staffing plan.
