Governor Josh Stein and North Carolina Health and Human Services Secretary Dev Sangvai participated in a roundtable discussion held in Nash County to address the importance of NC Medicaid in rural communities. The discussion, which included local health providers and community leaders, centered on the program’s role as a crucial support for rural communities amidst potential federal cuts.
Governor Stein emphasized the program’s significance, stating, “NC Medicaid is an innovative and fiscally responsible program that has thrived with bipartisan support and helps keep North Carolinians healthy, especially in rural communities.” He highlighted the coverage provided to over 3 million North Carolinians and the reinforcement it offers to rural hospitals.
In rural areas, more than half the population benefits from NC Medicaid, which is a significant financial pillar for rural hospitals experiencing economic challenges. With Medicaid providing coverage to over 230,000 people in rural communities, its expansion allows individuals to access necessary medical services, including check-ups and prescriptions. Across the state, Medicaid supports 3 million residents, covering children, the elderly, people with disabilities, and working adults.
Secretary Sangvai detailed the program’s life-saving capabilities, noting that it offers preventive care, pregnancy-related support, mental health services, and substance use treatments. He remarked, “North Carolinians know the value and importance of what NC Medicaid does for communities and our state.”
The roundtable was organized by UNC Health Nash, a non-profit hospital that serves patients across rural counties in Eastern North Carolina. The discussion occurs as Congress considers substantial cuts to Medicaid, potentially causing harm to both the healthcare infrastructure and patient coverage.
L. Lee Isley, President and CEO of UNC Health Nash, explained the critical role Medicaid plays: “Hospitals like Nash see first-hand every single day how Medicaid provides patients with access to critical services that keep them healthy and able to work and contribute to society.” He expressed concern about the potential negative impacts of cuts, which he said could limit healthcare access and force rural hospitals to reduce essential services.
The event also featured contributions from other key local figures, including Dr. L. Lee Isley, Reuben Blackwell, Dr. Joanna Dauber, and Tyronda “Ty” Whitaker, reflecting a broad community engagement in the discussions on NC Medicaid’s future.
