Governor Josh Stein is set to honor the achievements and resilience of graduates in western North Carolina, as the region continues to recover from the impact of Hurricane Helene. On May 9 and 10, Stein will deliver speeches at the commencement ceremonies of three educational institutions: Appalachian State University, Western Carolina University, and Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College.

He noted the disruptions caused not only by Hurricane Helene but also by the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. “These graduates, many of whom already had their education disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, have demonstrated tremendous resilience in the face of adversity following Hurricane Helene,” Stein remarked. “I am proud to recognize their determination and grit.”
The ceremonies will begin on Friday, May 9, with Appalachian State University’s College of Arts and Sciences at 5:00 PM. Inquiries regarding this event can be sent to news@appstate.edu.
