Wake County Public Health and Wake County Animal Control have confirmed that a fox tested positive for rabies after biting a person on June 24. The incident occurred in a neighborhood near Pulley Town Road and Thornburg Drive in Wake Forest. The fox was captured and subsequently tested positive for rabies.
Currently, no other incidents related to the rabid fox have been reported. In response, Wake County Communicable Disease and Animal Control plan to canvass the area to inform residents and check if any pets require vaccination.
Residents in the vicinity of the bite are encouraged to contact the Wake County Communicable Disease line at 919-250-4462 if they may have encountered the fox. Those bitten or scratched should seek medical care immediately.
“While rare, rabies is a deadly disease that can spread from animals to humans, so it’s critical to take simple steps to protect yourself and your pets,” said Wake County Commissioner Safiyah Jackson. “Avoid contact with wild animals, make sure your pets are up to date on their rabies vaccinations and report any unusual animal behavior to authorities right away.”
Wake County advises pet owners with outdoor access for their animals to ensure vaccinations are current. Residents who observe unusual animal behavior should contact Animal Control officials promptly.
