Erin Paré, a public figure known for her active engagement on social media, recently shared insights and updates through a series of tweets. Her posts addressed taxation issues related to sports betting, legislative efforts to address these concerns, and constituent services involving the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
On July 7, 2025, Erin Paré highlighted an issue with the current state tax policy on sports betting. She explained that if someone invests $1,000 in a sports betting app and ends up breaking even after winning and losing $1,000 each, they are still required to pay income tax on the winnings without considering the losses. “Say you put $1,000 in your sports betting app. With that money you make a series of bets. You win $1,000 and then later lose $1,000, breaking even at the end of the day. Right now the state is forcing you to pay income tax on the $1,000 you won without taking in to account the”
In another tweet posted shortly thereafter on July 7, 2025, Paré discussed House Bill 14 (HB 14), which she co-sponsored with Representatives Kidwell, Tyson, and Winslow. The bill aims to align state law with federal standards by allowing itemized deductions for gambling losses up to the amount of winnings. Paré described this as a matter of fairness in taxation: “HB 14 (sponsored by me, Rep. Kidwell, Rep. Tyson, and Rep. Winslow) fixes this by joining virtually every other state that has legal sports betting by conforming to federal law and allowing the itemized deduction of losses capped at winnings. This is a fairness in taxation issue”
Later that day on July 7, 2025, Paré shared a voicemail from a constituent who received assistance from her office regarding difficulties with the DMV. She noted ongoing issues with bureaucratic inefficiencies within the DMV system and mentioned plans for rebuilding and upgrading facilities like those in Fuquay-Varina: “This voicemail is from one of my constituents my office has helped. In this case, the problem was navigating through the DMV disaster to find a solution in an urgent situation. The DMV has been a bureaucratic nightmare for years.”
