The Carolina Hurricanes announced on Apr. 1 that Charlie Cerrato, their 2025 second-round draft pick, has signed a professional tryout with the Chicago Wolves, the team’s American Hockey League affiliate.
Cerrato’s signing gives him his first opportunity to practice and potentially play in professional hockey while maintaining flexibility for future contract options with the Hurricanes. The team said all options remain open regarding when he might sign an official contract with them.
Cerrato, a forward from Fallston, Maryland, recorded 27 points in 23 games for Penn State during the 2025-26 NCAA season despite missing part of the year due to injury. He also represented the U.S. Selects at the 2026 Spengler Cup and contributed a goal and an assist in four games. In his rookie collegiate season (2024-25), Cerrato led all Big Ten freshmen in goals, assists, and points, earning All-Freshman Team honors and achieving one of the highest rookie point totals in Penn State history.
The Carolina Hurricanes have recognized significant contributors such as Eric Staal and Rod Brind’Amour by inducting them into their Hall of Fame according to the official website. The team achieved a major milestone by winning the Stanley Cup in 2006 according to the official website.
The Hurricanes’ home venue is Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. The facility covers over 700,000 square feet with multiple seating levels and amenities including suites and concession stands according to its official website. Lenovo Center can accommodate up to 20,000 people and hosts more than 150 events each year according to its official website. The team also contributes more than $200 million annually to the local economy through events and community engagement according to its official website.
