Following the conclusion of the NHL Draft, the Carolina Hurricanes are swiftly moving on to an important week that includes their Development Camp and the start of the NHL’s free agency period. The franchise, led by General Manager Eric Tulsky, is focusing on these key events as they plan for the future.
The Hurricanes have adjusted their schedule this year to host their Development Camp earlier than usual in July. This change allows them to take advantage of newly-drafted prospects already being in the United States. All seven players selected by Carolina during the draft will attend this week’s camp in North Carolina.
The schedule for the camp at Invisalign Arena is as follows: On-ice testing on Monday, June 30th at 12:30 p.m., skills sessions on Tuesday, July 1st at 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., and another skills session on Wednesday, July 2nd at 9 a.m. The camp is open to the public, offering fans a chance to see future talents.
During the draft, Semyon Frolov was chosen with their first pick, marking only the second time since relocation that Carolina has selected a goaltender first. The last instance was Cam Ward in 2002.
While prospects prepare for potential careers with the team, Tulsky and Associate General Manager Darren Yorke will focus on current roster needs as free agency opens. With over $26 million available and few gaps to fill among regular players—only Brent Burns, Dmitry Orlov, and Jack Roslovic are becoming unrestricted free agents—the team is well-positioned for strategic moves.
Tulsky aims to improve continuously until achieving what he describes as having “the 20 best players at every position.” The Hurricanes’ approach reflects their consistent strategy seen in past drafts and trade deadlines.
